"Are we setting ourselves up for failure?"

This year I'm on a mission to find out the truth. 2018 is the year for adding to your life, not taking away.


2018 Talk

Now when it comes to making a New Year resolution I'm always a bit sceptical. Most of the time we make rash decisions when it comes to giving something up and then, unfortunately, the chances of actually succeeding are much lower. There have been countless times where I've decided to give up chocolate (why, oh why I have no idea!) and ultimately failed within days.

You see my lovely readers, the problem is that when you tell your body you can't have something, immediately it's all it can think about. Much like going on a diet, we are setting ourselves up for failure. Which ultimately will end with a binge, the feeling of guilt, & then the need for control, & so the vicious circle continues. This is not a healthy way to live & it's what we need to avoid! So this year I'm on a mission to set realistic goals. 

Seriously though how many of us can remember what our New Year Resolutions were last year? I think I set myself 5 & I can't remember any of them. Come to think of it, maybe I was being slightly ambitious. I wonder if I conquered any of them!?!

The Plan

This year is going to be different! Cliché I know. Isn't that what we tell ourselves every year? But it's true, I've made a decision that this New Year instead of taking something away from my life, instead of trying to 'loose' weight, 'quit' smoking or 'give up' sugar, (these are just examples, not personal aims) I am going to add to my life. I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to add to my life this year, but it's time to give it some thorough thought. I want it to be something that I have been conscious of all year round, not just a snap decision as usual.

I want to focus on something that will truly be beneficial to me. Maybe it will benefit me mentally, or maybe it'll be something that will help towards my future, possibly work wise. I'm not sure, but it's going to be good. The one thing I do know for sure is that I don't want it to be measurable. The more measurable something is the more chance there is of failure & the opportunity to judge ourselves.

 "As a society, we are so focused on numbers and how these numbers equate to our worth"

The Numbers Game

As a society, we are so focused on numbers and how these numbers equate to our worth. How much we weigh, how many followers we have, what our macros are, how much this or that person lifts. I feel the fitness industry has been very focused on this for such a long time now. I don't want to put a downer on this as I know the benefits it can have on somebodies general health, mine included. When it comes to mental health I feel that focusing on numbers can be really harmful, especially on the younger generation who can be very easily influenced by visual content. It makes it very easy to compare ourselves to others which can be very disheartening as we all have different bodies & we are all on different journeys. So it really doesn't make sense

The Aim

"Set yourself on a mission to start a journey not reach the end"

The aim of the blog post is just to make you think a little about your mentality before setting yourself unrealistic goals. Set yourself on a mission to start a journey not reach the end. Much like health & fitness, many things in life can be a lifelong journey. Not just something you do for a month & then you've completed. 

  1. Be Patient
  2. Enjoy the Journey
  3. Be Kind to Yourself 
  4. Judge Less
  5. Bring Happiness 

Keep in mind these Top 5 Tips when deciding on your New Year's Resolution this year. It's a chance to make a difference in your life & possibly to others. As long as you are attempting to be the best person you can be then that's all that matters. I know that whatever my New Year's Resolution is it will definitely be something that will involve me learning & growing as a person. 



And remember - Keep Being Awesome!
