How his GirlBoss launched the 1st round yoga mats in the UK

-
Welcome back to this week's GirlBoss Blog Series where we interview inspiring new & old female entrepreneurs from around the world. This Blog was created to inspire you to keep working on that side project & keep on pushing forward. I met Heidi for the first time in Thailand, on Koh Tao island & then later bumped into her at my local gym in the UK, that's when she told me she was starting a new brand. I knew right away that I wanted her story to appear on the GirlBoss blog.
Let's hear it from Heidi & The Form round yoga mats.
Q - Hi Heidi, tell us more about what your business is about?
-
Form is a carbon-negative fitness company. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Form, we aim to create exciting and unique products that enhance the fitness experience whilst also having a positive affect on our environment.
-
Q - What's inspired you to start making round yoga mats?
We love to be different and always question the status quo - we wondered why fitness mats were rectangular when circles have been proven so many times to have a positive effect on our mental state, especially when this is such a big part of yoga practice, as well as our health and well-being in general. Plus, more practically, you don't have to move them around in class when your teacher changes direction, making your practice flow much better.

Q - Who designs the mats?
I design the mats, with a little help and feedback from Toby - who is always brutally honest!
-
Q - I know that you run  this business with your partner, what is it like working with your other half?
Whenever I say that we are working together people always look concerned, but I can honestly say that this is a part of the business that has never even crossed my mind as a concern! Starting a business together was just a natural step for us, our strengths and weaknesses compliment each other's and we always try to understand the other's point of view if we ever disagree on something. Neither of us are afraid to be wrong which I think is a necessary skill to have when working in any partnership or team. When you are wrong about something, it means you have learnt something new, which can only be a good thing.

Q - Do you feel that having each other can help push through hard times?
Yes, definitely, whenever something is stressful or presents itself as a challenge, we are always there to ground each other and put things in perspective. Our main aim for the business is to make positive change in the world, so this motivates us to rise above anything that might hit the fan.
-
Q - What has been the most challenging thing about setting up your business?
The most challenging aspect of starting our business so far has been time - we both have jobs with a lot of responsibility outside of Form so balancing everything is definitely challenging at times.

-
Q - Did you use a loan or savings for the start up costs?
We have both invested our savings.
-
Q - How did you find a supplier for the mats?
We did a lot of research online! - Round yoga mats are not easy to find...
-
Q - Your business is fairly new, how would you say it's going at the moment?
Yes, very new. So much has happened over the past few months that it is easy to forget that we only really got started at Christmas! So far, it is going really well, Toby and I both love doing it and we are learning so much valuable information about running a business. We have had great feedback from everyone about our products and our customers love them so that is always great to hear.

-
Q - How does it feel to be the owner of your own brand?
It is the best thing I have ever done - it gives you a new sense of achievement and independence. Everyday is exciting for different reasons.
-
Q - What sort of tactics do you use for marketing your brand?
At the moment we have been using social media to raise the profile of Form and what we are aiming to achieve. We hope to inspire people to join us in making a positive impact on our environment and to appreciate and explore the world around us.

Q - Where do you turn for inspiration?
I read a LOT. Books by entrepreneurs and those who are smarter and more experienced than I am! i.e Richard Branson and Simon Sinek. I also watch a lot of TED talks, I like to start the day with TED talk to get my brain in gear before I dive straight into to work.
-
Q - Did you think at any point, this is too hard, I want to give up, and how did you overcome that state of mind?
No,...not yet anyway! (- Is this going to happen at some point?!!) I think I love doing it too much.
-
Q - How do you unwind and switch off?
I go to the gym/yoga/sauna. I also love drawing and painting, and coming up with new ideas for products...

Q - What kind of advice would you give to someone who's just starting up?
Make sure what you are doing is something you truly love, you will need the motivation to keep you going when you have to work at all hours of the day!
-
Q - What if I have the best idea in the world but I'm just not quite ready, not quite there, don't quite have the finances. What should I do?
Start anyway. Get your ideas down, see if anyone around you is interested in helping you out. Online promotion is free, setting up a website is relatively cheap and you can find support online from a variety of sources, both for advice and financially. There are so many competitions, advice and support networks for start-ups now, just get on Google and get going. There has never been a better time to start up your own business!

Q - And if I don't have an idea, but I'm very keen to start a business, where do you think I should look?
Find inspiration in what you love to do day-to-day: what you learn and what you see, read or listen to. Keep a notebook of all the ideas you come up with (even if they seem silly at the time) something will stick and one day you'll have your 'eureka!' moment. Good luck!
